Storage in Transit: The Insurance Handoff Moving Companies Should Document

Quick answer: Goods in a moving truck, temporary storage and a long-term warehouse may fall under different insurance terms. Document the custody dates, location, shipment value and customer agreement at each transition. A customer’s valuation selection describes the mover’s liability arrangement; it is not automatically the same as the mover’s cargo or warehouse insurance.

Where does the shipment actually go?

Map origin pickup, overnight truck parking, transfer warehouse, temporary storage and final delivery. Identify any third party that takes custody. Ask the insurer how storage in transit is defined, whether there is a time restriction and whether every location must be scheduled.

Handoff detailWhy it matters
Arrival and release datesTests any storage-duration condition
Exact warehouse addressMatches scheduled locations and catastrophe exposure
Inventory and condition recordHelps establish what was received and when damage was noted
High-value items declared by the customerSupports valuation and limit review
Third-party warehouse agreementIdentifies responsibility and contractual assumptions

Keep valuation and insurance separate

FMCSA explains full-value and released-value liability options for interstate household-goods moves, including the importance of identifying extraordinary-value articles. Do not tell customers that your cargo policy automatically gives them a separate insurance contract or identical protection. Intrastate moves also require review of the applicable state's rules.

Compare what the moving agreement obligates the business to pay with what the insurer agreed to cover. Ask about owner-packed items, unexplained shortages, handling, water damage and contractual liability. The label “all risk” does not answer every exclusion.

Check the total value at one place

A per-truck cargo limit may look adequate until several shipments collect at one warehouse. Review maximum accumulated value, not average daily value. Also review deductibles and whether loss at a third-party location is treated differently.

What belongs in a renewal submission?

Provide a shipment-flow diagram, storage addresses, typical and maximum dwell time, peak values and sample customer/warehouse agreements. Remove private customer details. These records make it possible to discuss actual gaps between transport and storage rather than comparing premium against a vague description of “moving services.”
